OUR LAST ARGUMENT
“Four years in power, and that is how far we got: tanks – our last argument.”
German playwright Heiner Müller wrote this line in the 1980s, referring to the national uprising in Berlin in 1953, when tanks were used against civilians – within a nation, in times of peace.
With Budapest in ’56, Prague in ’68 and Beijing in ’89 such terrifying images returned to the eyes of the world, revealing the fragile foundation of the word ‘freedom’ and giving an appeal to always stand up for it.
